When you&#8217;re welcoming a new pet into your home, follow our tips for caring for this special addition to your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before You Bring Your Pet Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make sure you&#8217;re ready for the commitment. <\/strong>Do you have an hour or more every day to dedicate to basic care like feeding, bathing, grooming, walking, litterbox-cleaning, veterinarian visits, etc.?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get all the gear ready before homecoming. <\/strong>This includes food and water bowls, harnesses and leashes, pet carrier, pet beds, toys, food, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check for toxic houseplants and remove them.<\/strong> Read this <a href=\"http:\/\/companioncarepets.com\/field-guide-toxic-plants-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Field Guide to Most Toxic Plants for Pets<\/a>. Let your pet come up to and meet everyone at their own pace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maintain physical control when you introduce your new pet to other pets.<\/strong> Keeps dogs on leashes. Senior pets may prefer an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petco.com\/shop\/en\/petcostore\/product\/reddy-black-elevated-double-diner-dog-bowl-375-cups-3551692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elevated pet feeding table<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Give your pet a safe place in your home to call their own. <\/strong>This can be a crate or pet bed. Everyone in your family should know this is your pet&#8217;s &#8220;safe zone&#8221; to be alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consider placing pet beds in various spots in your house<\/strong>, as your pet learns their favorite areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Provide pet toys.<\/strong> These don&#8217;t have to be expensive, but something like a cardboard box for cats of Kong treat toy for dogs will prevent boredom and provide enrichment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learn your pet&#8217;s energy level. <\/strong>An active pet needs lots of exercise to live a happy, healthy life and stay out of mischief. On the other hand, a laid-back pet won&#8217;t want to join your jogs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start training for better behavior right away.<\/strong> For instance, brush your dog while giving them treats to teach that grooming is a bonding time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcoming a New Pet: Multiple Pets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For cats, you need one litterbox per cat, plus an extra one.<\/strong> If you have two stories, place litterbox options on all floors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitor mealtime <\/strong>to prevent fights and make sure everyone gets the right amount of food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watch out for jealousy.<\/strong> Give each pet their own, individual attention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gradyvet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/welcoming-a-new-pet-4.png\" alt=\"Welcoming a New Pet: Cats &amp; Dogs\" class=\"wp-image-1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gradyvet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/welcoming-a-new-pet-4.png 800w, https:\/\/www.gradyvet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/welcoming-a-new-pet-4-768x438.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcoming a New Pet: Puppies and Kittens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make housetraining and litterbox training a routine.<\/strong> Find a schedule that works for you and your pet&#8230; and stick to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be prepared to play! <\/strong>Play with toys, take walks and get on the floor with your pet. Puppies and kittens have higher energy levels and also love spending time with you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Invest in a scratching post or chew toys.<\/strong> Otherwise, you may find yourself investing in new furniture. And that&#8217;s a lot more expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Understand that young pets need more training.<\/strong> The world is new to them! You have to teach your pet about good behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supervise young pets. <\/strong>Kittens and puppies are curious and need to be watched most of the time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offer plenty of rest time.<\/strong> Growing animals need lots of sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoy life with your new pet!
